My love of nature and habitat draws me out to the garden. I love to create spaces in gardens that are natural but boldly colorful and surprising.

The architect requested that the landscape visually flow seamlessly into the surrounding California scrub and mountain vistas. However, the family originally wanted Grass, birch trees and roses. Through gentle reasoning, the architect’s vision prevailed. It is a thrill to know how much the homeowners now love this natural garden and have learned the names of every plant. They are xeriscape ambassadors working hard to convert all their friends to lose their lawns.

Just off two busy streets, this garden is a quiet, pretty sanctuary. Although the spaces are full with plants and the lawn is long gone, there are always children playing all through the various areas. They don’t seem to miss a lawn. This garden has been on the Mar Vista Garden tour since it’s inception and was also covered in the Venice Garden tour when they swung over into the Mar vista area.

Garden in transition: 1940 concrete walls terrace this hillside property. The transition to native California and Mediterranean plantings began in ernest 3 years ago. Many recycled elements and playful details are repurposed in this vibrant garden. A new wide curved stair replaces the previous warren of small stair connections. Bold cactus and succulents draw your eyes up to the hill. Planting with an eye toward habitat, it is definitely a private wild kingdom.
